Bidding Advice Never been to an auction before or just after some helpful tips? Advice to Bidders Watch the Auctioneer - he may be taking somebody else's bid.
Don't get involved in a conversation when a lot you want is getting near - concentrate! If the auctioneer doesn't seem to have taken your bid - shout louder, wave higher. Don't crowd the porter - others want to see what is being sold.
If you feel there is a problem, mention it at the time - it will probably be too late to do anything about it later.
Bid quickly for your lot - by the very nature of an auction it is fast, so if you are too slow you may lose it.
At the fall of the hammer, the lot is your responsibility (if your bid was successful) - however, title to it does not pass until you have paid.
If you are a private buyer, don't be put off by dealers in the saleroom - they need to sell the item again AND make a profit.
